As a first-generation college student, an EOPS community college counselor elevated my academic trajectory. I understand the power of culturally responsive student mentorship, targeted academic counseling, and navigational capital because of her, and I aspire to support all scholars in this same way.
While many of my goals as a counselor continue to manifest with experience, my biggest aspiration is to open doors for other First-Generation students and provide culturally sensitive mental health interventions.
I believe School Counselors and school-based mental health clinicians have a unique window of opportunity to be a threat to inequity on both a micro and macro level. As advocates for social justice, we are perfectly positioned to challenge the use of single-story ideologies in our educational system, actively advocate, and redress inequities through data-driven support of all scholars and scholars who have been historically minoritized.
